Need for change

Waminda's research showed overwhelming evidence that a major change to the existing model was indicated: a critically urgent need for provision of services to people and families where Autism and Autism related disability existed.

Some 157 medically diagnosed cases were recorded in the initial Outcomes Report compiled at the end of 2007. The number of families requiring immediate help with children and youth far exceeded Waminda's ability to accommodate when services commenced in early 2008.

What is Autism?

Austism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which includes Autism and Aspergers syndrome, is a neuro-biological disorder that affects:
·   The way a person communicates
·   Socialises with others
·   Processes information from his/her senses
·   Adapts to his/her environment

These deficits often lead to behaviours such as:
·   Rigid adherence to routines
·   Fixations on objects or topics
·   Withdrawal
·   Aggression
·   Bizarre or repetitive body movements

ASD can have a profound and complicated impact on the most apparently simple everyday activities. ASD affects:
·   People of all intellectual abilities, from those with a profound intellectual disability, to people who are more able and, in some cases, gifted.
·   Approximately four boys to every girl
·   At least one person in every 250

The cause of autism is not fully understood. There is, as yet, no cure. Emphasis is on providing individualised, highly structured therapy and treatment.

Waminda's research

In early 2007 Waminda Services began a year long program of research and community consultation to map the changing needs for disability services to people and families in the region.

Research was based on official data from local and State sources, including schools; as well as child care services, the Dalby Mental Health Unit, public information seminars and postal surveys.

Increase in regional soft and hard infrastructure projections were referenced from the CSIRO Report for the Surat Basin.

At the 2008 Surat Basis Development Conference in Chinchilla, one salient point repeatedly made was urgent and ongoing need for establishment of infrastructure. In the case of Autism Services, the current provision for the existing population does not begin to address current needs, much less future development.
