Wilkie Creek mine in the Surat Basin of south-east Queensland, commenced operations in 2005. The mine has been progressively developed as a modern, efficient mining operation and expansion is expected to continue. Wilkie Creek’s coal characteristics (low sulphur and low nitrogen) make it an excellent source of low ash, environmentally superior coal used for electric power generation domestically and for export. The open-cut operation utilises excavators, loaders and trucks for mining. Coal is railed 250 kilometres to the Port of Brisbane for export to Japan, the Philippines, Chile and Korea.
